The FCC proposes that all mobile phones sold in the U.S. be 100% compatible with hearing aids to ensure equal communication access for the 37.5 million Americans with hearing loss. The plan includes a transition period for manufacturers and service providers. The FCC also explores a broader definition of compatibility, potentially including Bluetooth connectivity. The proposal aims to reduce regulatory burdens and build on recommendations from the Hearing Aid Compatibility Task Force. Chairwoman Rosenworcel and Commissioner Starks have issued separate statements. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking was adopted on December 13, 2023.
