Safety and energy saving requirements

All imported products must conform to mandatory specifications (VC) enforced by National Mandatory Certification Regulatory Authorities (NRCS). There are two main mandatory codes for electrical and electronic products:

VC 8055 Mandatory Specification for Electrical and Electronic Equipment (VC). This mandatory specification specifies the mandatory safety requirements for EEE products.

VC 9008 Mandatory specification for energy efficiency and labelling of electrical and electronic equipment. The following products: electric ovens, air conditioners, dishwashers, audio and video equipment, refrigerators, washing machines, combinations of washers and dryers, tumble dryers are subject to LOA energy efficiency constraints.

The manufacturer of conformity assessed products must provide a Letter of Authorization (LOA). This document confirms that the product meets the safety requirements set by the NRCS. The agreement is valid for three years.

The VC 9008 was released by the South African Government on 7 February 2014. This mandatory specification covers energy efficiency requirements and energy efficiency labeling for some electrical and electronic equipment.
