When interconnected or close to each other, all electrical equipment or devices will affect each other, such as interference between televisions, GSM mobile phones, radios and nearby washing machines or power lines. The purpose of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is to allow all these side effects to be reasonably controlled. EMC specifies all existing and future technologies and technologies to reduce interference and enhance immunity.

The European Union Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2014/30/EU ensures that electrical and electronic equipment will not generate or be immune to electromagnetic interference.

The EMC Directive limits the electromagnetic radiation of equipment to ensure that such equipment does not interfere with radio and telecommunications and other equipment when used as intended. The directive also stipulates the anti-interference capabilities of such equipment and attempts to ensure that the equipment is not interfered by radio radiation when used as intended.

The main goal of this directive is to regulate the compatibility of EMC-related equipment:
Equipment (equipment and fixtures) need to comply with EMC requirements when they are put on the market and/or put into use. Fixed installations need to adopt good engineering practices. The competent authorities of EU countries may take measures if they do not comply with the regulations.
